Picnic Cake (with Dates)

Ingredients

• 1 cup dates, cut up
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 1/2 cups hot water
• 1/2 cup margarine
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 eggs
• 2 cups flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup chocolate chips
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/2 cup nuts, chopped

Recipe

• 1 combine the first 3 ingredients; let rest until cool.
• 2 cream margarine and sugar, adding eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
• 3 sift together flour, baking powder and salt. add to egg mixture. fold in cooled dates.
• 4 pour in a 9" x 13" baking pan. mix topping ingredients and sprinkle over batter.
• 5 bake at 350 f for 35-40 minutes.
